Arthur Thomas Sidwell - Photographer and Postcard Producer

Arthur Thomas Sidwell was a school attendance officer and whilst carrying out this role he took photographs of the places he visited.  These were turned into postcards (many by a half-tone process).  His wife Zillah was postmistress at Meriden and no doubt sold his postcards.  Most of the pictures date to the first decade of the 20th century and can be seen below.

  • 1870: Arthur was born Jul Qtr 1870 at Stretton under Fosse
  • 1881: lived with his parents John and Martha Sidwell and siblings Clara, Minnie, Percy, Arthur, Annie, John Lawrence and William T at Victoria Farm, Grange Lane, Foleshill
  • 1891: Lived with his Grandmother Dinah Sidwell and brother Percy and sister Clara at Station Road, Longford, Foleshill and was employed as a Baker
  • 1892: Married Zillah Isabella Tinsley of Foleshill on 12 Jun 1892 at Meriden St. Laurence. Zillah was born c1871 at Foleshill. Zillah died on 18 Jul 1952 and at that time lived at 44 Oakington Avenue, Wembley, Middx
  • 1898: Appointed as Sub Post Master at Meriden Sep 1898
  • 1901: Arthur was employed as the Sub Post Master and lived at the Post Office, Meriden with wife Zillah, a telegraph Clerk, and only son Arthur Tinsley Sidwell aged 6.
  • 1911: Arthur was employed as a school attendance officer and lived at the Post Office, Meriden with wife Zillah, the Sub Post Mistress and son Artie T Sidwell was still a schoolboy at age 16. Also living with them was Pattie L. Lloyd a servant/mothers help.
  • 1915: On 30 Oct 1915 Arthur’s son Artie (Arthur) enlisted in the Army Service Corp at Coventry. Artie survived the war and was discharged in 1919 when his address was shown as Ivy Cottage, Meriden.
  • 1936: Arthur died on 21 Apr 1936 at Meriden aged 65 and was survived by Zillah. They were living at Fernlea, Old Chester Road, Castle Bromwich.
