Died Undergoing Surgery, Henrietta Street, London on 17th May 1917, aged 47
He had been wounded at St Eloi, France and Flanders in April 1916 which resulted in his left arm being amputated. He aggravated the injury falling from a Horse which resulted in the surgery

Distinguished Service Order Citiation
Lord Kitchener's Despatch of 8.7.1901 gives bare details of Beatty's gallantry:
'At Evergreen, Eastern Transvaal, on 17th February, when Major Howard and orderly were killed, went back to fetch assistance through very close and heavy fire ; his horse was killed, hit three times' (London Gazette 20.8.1901). Read more here...
