History
The village was called Machitone in the Domesday Book of 1086. Maxstoke Castle was built in 1356 as a fortified manor house and has since been restored. It is said that Richard III stayed at Maxstoke Castle on the night before the battle of Bosworth. The table around which the plotters of the Gunpowder Plot is housed at the castle. The church dates from the 14th century. The ruins of Maxstoke Priory are nearby. The church was rebuilt in Georgian times.
