Summary of Flying Accident
Second Lieutenant Leslie Morley Fletcher, 19, was killed on July 5 1917 in a Sopwith Strutter of 71 Squadron when it side-slipped and crashed on take-off from the airfield. He has a private memorial and was from the Australian Flying Corps. Another Australian who was his passenger, Air Mechanic A.J Merritt, was badly burned in an attempt to save the pilot’s life; he was awarded the Meritorious Service Medal.
