War Memorials – Amington

The memorial in Amington commemorates men who died in both World Wars. The inscription reads as follows:

To the Glory of God and in Gratitude for the Remembrance
of the Lives and Example of the Men of Amington
Who Gave Their Lives in the Great War 1914 – 1918

Ten men died in WWII and the iscription reads:

Their Name Liveth for Evermore

War Memorials – Warton

A memorial clock was erected by the people of Warton in memory of the five men who lost their lives in WWI. The inscription reads as follows:

To the Glory of God
and in Memory of the Men
who Fell in the Great War
1914 – 1918
This Clock Has Been Erected
By the Inhabitants of Warton
1921

Two men who died in WWII are also remembered. The inscription reads as follows:

Greater love hath no man than this,
that a man lay down his life for his friends St John XV 13.

War Memorials – Stockingford

Many men from Stockingford died in WWI. The war memorial lists those who gave their lives in both World Wars.

There are also four men who died in WWI and are buried in family graves in the churchyard.

War Memorials – Shuttington & Alvecote

There were four men from Shuttington who died in WWI and one who died in WWII. The inscription for WWI reads as follows:

To the Glory of God
and in Constant Remembrance
of the Men of this Parish Who Fell
in the Great War 1914-1918

There is also a Roll of Honour of those who served in WWI and two men who died in WWII. The inscription reads as follows:

Members of the Shuttington and Alvecote Social Club Who Gave Their Lives for
Their Country in the World War from 1939 to 1945

War Memorials – Shustoke

The Shustoke memorial is the clock on the tower which was installed in 1921 in memory of those from the parish who fell during the Great War. Eighteen Shustoke men died and the inscription on a stone nearby reads as follows:

To the Glory of God and in Ever Grateful Memory of the Following  Who Laid

Down Their Lives in

The Great War 1914 – 1919

The eighteen men are commemorated on a brass memorial and a Roll of Honour inside the church. One man who died in WWII is also remembered.

War Memorials – Polesworth St Editha’s Church

The parish of Polesworth includes Warton, Dordon and Pooley Hall Colliery. There are three main memorials in Polesworth: one at St Editha’s church, one at Polesworth Baptist church and one at Pooley Hall Colliery. 

On St Editha’s church memorial, there are fifty-eight men from WWI and twelve from WWII who are commemorated.

War Memorials – Over Whitacre

In Over Whitacre, the memorial spire clock, added to the spire in 1933, is dedicated to the Fallen of both World Wars.

The inscription for WWI reads as follows:

The Spire Clock is dedicated to the Fallen 
Erected in Grateful Memory of the Men of Over Whitacre Parish
Who Died Fighting to Preserve Us, Our Homes and Liberty
in the Great War [1914 – 1918].
May They Rest in Peace

The inscription for WWII reads as follows;

In Memory of the Following Men who Gave their Lives
in the Service of their Country during the
World War 1939 – 1945

War Memorials – Orton-on-the-Hill

Orton-on-the-Hill is just outside the border of the NNWFHS area but some of the men on it have strong connections to our area.

The memorial commemorates men who died in WWI and WWII. It also lists a Roll of Honour of those who served. The inscription reads as follows:

To the Glory of God and in Grateful Memory of
Who Gave Their Lives for Freedom and Honour
in the Great War 1914-1918

War Memorials – Nuneaton Riversley Park Addendum

There are several memorials in Riversley Park, Nuneaton. The memorial is situated in front of the Museum and Art Gallery in Riversley Park, Coton Road, Nuneaton.

This memorial commemorates further Nuneaton men who served in WWI and WWII. The inscription reads as follows:

In memory of the brave men of Nuneaton and neighbourhood who gave their lives for their

King and Country in the Great War 1914 – 1919

And in loving memory of all who fell in the World War 1939 – 1945Their names shall live for evermore
