Major Beatty was the brother of Admiral Sir David Beatty, Commander of the Fleet. He lived at Oakfield in South Street, Atherstone. He was also as well-known horse trainer.

    Lord Kitchener’s Despatch of 8 Jul 1901 gives a few details of Beatty’s gallantry:
    At Evergreen, Eastern Transvaal, on 17th February, when Major Howard and orderly were killed, he went back to fetch assistance through very close and heavy fire; his horse was killed, hit three times. (London Gazette 20.8.1901). Read more here…
