- Circumstances of George’s Death. George was taken prisoner on 8 Mar 1918 and contracted pneumonia at Munster POW camp, Westphalia before being transferred to Bottrop Camp Reserve Hospital where he died. His remains were moved from that camp cemetery to Cologne Southern Cemetery, now administered by the CWGC. Charles Gamble, BA,, BSc wrote of George, His acts bespeak his character: genial, generous, just, of rare mettle. He was held at his school in more than usual affection by his colleagues and boys. In house and classroom, on the playing field and in his study, he spoke and lived the life he preached. He was a scholar of many parts, a fine athlete and a charming companion.
